What are Dentures?

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are artificial teeth that are formed by taking impressions of your mouth to replace your missing teeth.

Types of Dentures

    • Partial Dentures: These are for the patients who are missing some of their teeth from a particular arch.
    • Complete Dentures: These are used by the patients who are missing all of their teeth from an arch (or more commonly, both the arch).
    • Copy Dentures: These are simply made by taking an impression of a patient’s existing dentures and remaking them.

Denture’s Care

    • Just like normal teeth, dentures can also build up plaques. And therefore, cleaning the dentures daily is recommended.
    • Dentures should not be worn constantly. Remove it when you are sleeping. This helps the tissues to recover.
    • Dentures should be removed while smoking. This will prevent the denture acrylic from overheating, which can result in burning the soft tissues. This also reduces the risk of fungal infections.

Cleaning of Dentures

    • Sodium Hypochlorite: Immersing dentures in a hypochlorite solution for more than 6 hours occasionally will eliminate plaque and heavy staining of the denture.
    • Effervescent Cleanser: Effervescent cleansers are the most popular immersion cleansers and include alkaline peroxides, perborates, and persulphates. They are safe for use and do not cause deterioration of the acrylic resin or the metals used in denture construction.
    • Acid Cleanser: Sulphamic acid is a type of acid cleanser that is used to prevent the formation of plaque on dentures. This has very good compatibility with many denture materials, including the metals used in denture construction.
    • Brushing: It is the most commonly used technique to clean dentures. The patient should brush them often with soap, water, and a soft nylon toothbrush that has a small head, as this will enable the brush to reach into all the areas of the denture surface.

Benefits of Dentures
